"From Publius Vergilius Maro: Georgica
An early proof before the block was reduced to the borderline
Reference: Rewald 158 (early state)
This is an illustration for the book planned by Philippe Gonin for publication in April, 1939, but which time of Rewald’s catalogue (1951) had not yet appeared. The prospectus indicated a proposed edition of 800 printed in black and red. Some of the woodcuts, including this one, were first published in Minotaure, May, 1939. Maillol drew the designs on the blocks, which were then cut by professional wood engravers."
